Matt and Morgan are on a cinematic journey through all 31 feature films starring the one and only Elvis Presley. In addition to the individual films, they’ll also be discussing the different cultural aspects of Elvis outside of his movies and the general vibe of the 50’s and 60’s through a present day perspective.

Episode 8: Blue Hawaii (1961)
Friday Jul 09, 2021
Friday Jul 09, 2021
Elvis makes his first of 3 films in Hawaii and boy howdy it's a box office smash. Why was it such a big earner? Well, the soundtrack is a doozy but maybe it has something to do with him wearing some tiny short shorts for the majority of the runtime. Who's to say?
We get completely derailed during the cast chat and spend a few minutes discussing the baffling late 60's TV series The Flying Nun. Oh also the climax of this film features Elvis spanking a teen girl in wet lingerie. Y'know, as you do.

Episode 7: Wild in the Country (1961)

What a difference a week makes. We follow up our strongly worded takedown of Flaming Star with a heaping of praise for Wild in the Country. Universal equilibrium is maintained. This movie is great and it's shocking that it isn't discussed more. A true hidden gem within Elvis' filmography.
There's some surprising cast and crew this time. Also make sure to stick around for the end where we delve into an alternate timeline where Elvis plays Tony in 1961's West Side Story. Oh, what might have been.

Episode 6: Flaming Star (1960)
Friday Jun 25, 2021
Friday Jun 25, 2021
Guys, we need to talk about Flaming Star. Pretty well-regarded by critics as far as Elvis' films go, it is nevertheless quite problematic.
Our present day lens is focusing hard this week on the representation of indigenous people in film. Morgan reads her notes chronicling in real time her thoughts while watching the movie. There's a lot.
Plus: Tangents about The Grapes of Wrath and Marlon Brando refusing his Oscar for The Godfather. All this and more served up fresh for you to lend an ear to.

Episode 5: G.I. Blues (1960)
Friday Jun 18, 2021
Friday Jun 18, 2021
After 2 years in the army, Elvis returns to the screen and nothing is ever really the same again. We charitably call this film "lame" and it's easily our least favourite so far. Doesn't help that last time we watched arguably Elvis' best.
Matt takes an opportunity to discuss the origins and his love of Giallo films. Morgan gives the movie a reality check in regards to how the subplot with the baby would probably really go down. Why did they put a baby in this movie? Buckle up for this nonsense.

Episode 4: King Creole (1958)
Friday Jun 11, 2021
Friday Jun 11, 2021
It's our longest episode yet. Riding right up to that hour mark. Then again it's about Elvis' longest feature film, so perhaps it was to be expected.
You know the drill by now. We talk the plot and the songs. Matt gabs about actors and their work in all kinds of movies. Morgan gets into the details of the costumes.
Plus: Tangents about the origin of Homer Simpsons' voice and our opinions on Matthew McConaughey's mid-2000's filmic output. All this and more we offer for your listening pleasure.

Episode 3: Jailhouse Rock (1957)
Friday Jun 04, 2021
Friday Jun 04, 2021
This one's a biggie. Even folks who've never seen an Elvis film can picture him clad in his ensemble from the big musical number in his third feature. Genuine movie history and iconography. It's the photo used for his dang Wikipedia entry.
Take away that famous sequence though and the film's overall plot is quite scattershot. Direct quote from Morgan in Episode 2: "We're gonna talk a lot about queerbaiting in Jailhouse Rock. It's gonna get really wild." We deliver on that promise and then some.

Episode 2: Loving You (1957)
Friday May 28, 2021
Friday May 28, 2021
Episode 2, Loving You. Elvis is back and now in colour! Mr. Presley fares much better in his 2nd film outing. Once again we discuss the film's plot and such amid all sorts of digressions.
Hopefully you aren't listening for the accuracy of our recollection of the film's character names. We really dropped the ball this time. Deke is referred to by Zeke a few times. Tex is Rex for almost the whole runtime. At least that latter flub leads to Morgan making a solid Steam Powered Giraffe reference.

Episode 1: Love Me Tender (1956)
Friday May 21, 2021
Friday May 21, 2021
We start things off with 1956's Love Me Tender. Elvis Presley? In a movie? It's just crazy enough to work. Maybe.
There are differing opinions on the success of this first cinema venture for The King. Talk of Elvis' rise to stardom is had and we do get around to talking about the film's plot, the cast, the inaccurate costumes and all kinds of other stuff.
It's a little all over the place (both the movie and this podcast) but hey it can only get better from here. Right?
